And He Said, Let There Be Light

I surely do love the sun, without it we would all be pretty cold, and that thing we take for granted, energy, wouldn't exist. Now there is one more reason to love the sun and that is the first solar farm that can operate 24/7 meaning the electrons keep on flowing well into the night. The Gemasolar array is located in Spain and makes use of dual tanks of molten salt to store heat energy during the day which is then used as a battery system at night to supply power to the grid. The plant is rated at 19.9MW and while that is relatively small, the fact that it can run even at night makes up for it. Gemasolar is expected to produce 110,000MWh of energy annually which is enough to power 250,000 homes. It is designed to operate 6,500 hours annually.

It is nice to see initiative towards renewable energy sources. Even if those initiatives are mainly to avoid the economical distractions of rising oil costs. Hopefully even more solar farms like this are built within the near future to help out in these harsh times. I for one am entirely supporting of any venture into this territory and strongly believe that everyone should do their part to take away even the slightest bit of dependence on fossil fuels.
